The Institute for Chemistry in Industry was established in 1992 as a component of the University of Hull's Department of Chemistry in order to maintain and develop strong links with the industrial and public services , especially, but not exclusively, in the Yorkshire and Lincolnshire areas. Currently this is achieved in four main ways:
Participation in a major new ERDF Project for providing developmental assistance for Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs) in Objective Area 2 in East and North Yorkshire and North-East Lincolnshire. Staff involved in the project will provide expertise in science and engineering to help SMEs enhance their products or solve process problems. Institute staff will provide specialist knowledge in chemistry and chemicals-related areas (see the Design Enterprise Centre and ETCIC pages on this site).
Consultancy and Advisory Services for industry. The Institute is pleased to assist industrial and other enterprises of all sizes in any location in any area. It can undertake projects itself, or give advice on appropriate sources of assistance.
Courses in Health and Safety and related areas. A full suite of NEBOSH courses is offered anually. A BSc course in Occupational Safety and Environmental Management is also available.
Technology Club. The Institute hosts this Club which provides a forum for discussion of matters of mutual interests to its members. It is administered by an independent committee of industrialists and educationalists. Each year, from September to June, the Club holds a series of presentations and visits to local industry.
The Institute for Chemistry in Industry is an important component of the University of Hull's "reach out" portfolio, through which this University develops its interaction with the local and regional communities. The Institute has made strong efforts to be "user friendly" and can assure potential clients a warm welcome. It can point to many successes over the last decade, and looks forward to building on its achievements, especially to the benefit of local and regional enterprises.
The Institute Office is located in the Ferens Building, adjoining the University's Chemistry Building.
