Humber Chemical Focus - making chemistry work for the Humber region
home page Innovation

As part of HCF’s ongoing commitment to assist the region’s chemical organisations, we where involved in leading a unique project to build a full scale chemical training facility in the region. A radical solution was necessary to address the specialist skills needs of the chemical and allied engineering industry. An £8 million funding package was secured for the CATCH project (Centre for Assessment of Technical Competence - Humber). The centre offers a wide range of training opportunities from apprentices to experienced adults seeking competency assessment and validation as well as adding a new dimension to the regions offering to potential new investors.

The Humber is already home to a wide range of chemical businesses who are thriving in the ever changing economic environment. The area has major facilities offering what is thought to be one of the best remaining industrial deep water port opportunities in Europe supported by excellent transportation links. This combined with an availability of Greenfield sites already available for industrial development, and Europe’s biggest CHP (combined heat and power plant), providing cogeneration on a grand scale.

As well as enabling the Humber based refineries maintain their competitive positions in the European refining market by reducing utility costs by about 30%, it also reduces their environmental impact. It is estimated that the plant, with an overall efficiency of around 70%, will save about 3 million tonnes of CO2 per year compared with conventional coal fired generation. Among other benefits is the contribution to the energy infrastructure for future industrial development on the Humber Bank.

In addition to what the area itself has to offer, HCF has an established networking infrastructure offering a unique opportunity to our members to share best practice and bench marking, as well as a programme of conference events and seminars targeting specialist topic areas. HCF continues to address new and emerging issues which (along with the emerging Bio-Fuels market), coupled with its Investment, Skills and Networks themes, will promote and drive the competitiveness of the Humber chemical cluster.
