Linda McAvan MEP for the Humber and Yorkshire region came to visit the Humber Chemical Focus team on the 11^th May 2007.

Linda is Labour’s spokesperson in the European Parliament on the Environment and Public Health and is a member of the Environment, Public Health and Food Safety Committee. Linda also has a keen interest in economic regeneration, chairing the South Yorkshire Partnership Group overseeing the regional regeneration strategy.

Linda recently played a role in developing and over seeing the new European REACH legislation (Registration, Evaluation and Authorisation of Chemicals), due to come in to force post June 07.

With HCF’s governmental links, Linda was keen to come meet the HCF team and find out more about the regional chemical industry. Glyn Hughes and John Rowley of HCF gave a regional briefing on the scale and size of the Industry.

Seen as Linda played a role in developing the REACH Legislation, David Calvert of the ETCIC at the University of Hull gave a presentation on the new REACH Management Certificate Course developed with HCF. David also spoke of the other support services HCF are developing to support REACH with its transition.

After a short discussion, Clive Rounce (General Manager of CATCH) gave Linda a tour of the 10 acre CATCH site. Linda was keen to talk to a number of the ECITB apprentices asking them about their career aspirations and their thoughts on CATCH.

HCF are planning to host a large scale Energy, Bio-Fuels and Logistics event in the coming year. Watch this space for further details. Linda has kindly showed her support to such an event.

HCF are expanding our governmental links and reach across the whole of the UK and Europe. The good work of the chemical industry needs to be proactively communicated and meetings like this can only aid with those objectives.
