Wednesday 4th June 2008, saw over 100 delegates come together for the Humber’s Renewable Process Industries Conference at Forest Pines Hotel, North Lincolnshire. Hosted as part of Business Week 2008, Humber Chemical Focus, North Lincolnshire Council and Yorkshire Forward were pleased to be associated with the prestigious series of events. The event was formally opened by Councillor Mark Kirk, Leader of North Lincolnshire Council who warmly welcomed everyone to the region and the event.

Following this Dr Glyn Hughes, Chief Executive Officer of Humber Chemical Focus undertook the chairmanship of the event. Glyn commented “We are delighted to see so many attendees from the industry and public sector partners come together for this event. Humber Chemical Focus and North Lincolnshire view’s the development of the renewable process industry and sectors as a major opportunity for the region, support services and local economy”. He highlighted the size and scale of the local carbon economy and the potential for the region to grasp the newly arriving renewable based sector.

Louise Kingham, Chief Executive Officer of the Energy Institute, gave the plenary presentation. Louise opened with the very topical subject of “Energy in the national and international press in recent times”. Louise said “Energy security, supply and costs are all very hot topics at the moment”. Louise focused on a global perspective of energy, zooming down to a regional picture of energy in the Humber. She also touched on the importance of the Humber as a major electricity generator for the UK, mainly based on fossil fuel feedstock’s. She added: “This region has a major opportunity to have new investments in the growing renewable sectors such as wind/tidal electricity generation, bio-fuels as well as in super efficient CHP’s.  These investments need to continue to occur at a fast rate to ensure the security of supply”.

The next presentation switched to an important technology theme. Dr Geraint Evans, Technology Transfer Manager, from the National Non Food Crops Centre gave a brief introduction to the work and scope of the NNFCC. He noted “The key drivers for the NNFCC & DEFRA to look into the development of biofuels include energy security, finite fossil resources, climate change and governmental policy. But different countries have different priorities when it comes to these drivers. The Renewable Transports Fuels Obligation is the key driver for EU member states”. Geraint also said “To meet these targets the UK transport fuels market will have to supply over 2 million tpy (5% of the UK’s fuels supply) to meet the 2010 target, developing new technologies for the 2015 targets and beyond.” Geraint also touched on the three technologies that may come to fruition for the 2nd and 3rd generation biofuels – Bio Chemical, Thermo Chemical and Hybrid. The potential benefits and sustainability issues relating to these technologies was also discussed.

Introducing a stronger rural theme, John Seymour, Rural Affairs Spokesman for North East Bio-fuels (NEB), gave a farmers perspective of the developing biofuels supply chains.  John noted he had worked for many years in the NE process industries and in particular the fuels and petrochemicals sectors. John introduction North East Bio-fuels Ltd, itself representing a partnership approach to developing a ‘vertical’ biofuel supply chain. John said “Developing a tight and secure supply chain for the development of biofuels can provide many benefits.” John also showed a slide including an aerial picture of Sealsands highlighting the development of a major biofuels cluster on the mouth of the Tees in recent years. John then went onto explain the work and achievements NEB’s to support the emerging industry.

After John Seymour’s presentation, delegates were able to network and take the opportunity to have a conversation with the exhibitors at the back of the room. These exhibitors included Simon Storage, ABB Engineering Services, NNFCC, Wind Direct, AJM Consulting, Energy Institute, Carbon Action Yorkshire, NSAPI and Yorkshire Forward.

To carry on with the theme of biofuels, the conference heard from David Richards the new Managing Director of Vivergo Fuels Ltd speak of their new biofuels investment at the  Saltend site in the East Riding of Yorkshire. He opened with a brief introduction to Vivergo Fuels, explaining the tri-venture business model with Dupont, BP & Associated British Foods (owners of British Sugar). David said “The Humber was chosen as the preferred location for the investment due to the locality of feed-stocks, logistical infrastructure and locality to the existing petro-chemical industry”. David then highlighted to the audience the chosen technology provider for the site, with commercial production being planned to start in 2010. David also went on to say “Vivergo Fuels will also be using the investment as a technology platform to further develop the 2nd and 3rd generation technologies of bio-fuels. But you can’t have these scale technologies without utilising the learning and developments from the 1st generation of bio-fuels”.

The presentations then switched to a specialty materials theme with an input form Dr Keith Layden, President of Enterprise Technology & Actives group for Croda International Plc. Originating within the region Croda International Plc have recently become one of the region’s largest speciality personal care businesses based on utilising natural and renewable sources of feedstock’s.  With turnover now approaching the billion pound mark Keith noted: “Today Croda are a global leading supplier in speciality and high value oleochemicals into the personal care, health care, home care, crop care, polymers and coatings, lubricants and textiles markets. Croda’s business is centered around separation, concentration, purification and derivatisation of natural products with 80 years experience. Croda continue to develop renewable and sustainable products to meet our customers needs. Croda aims to add value to every product it markets”. Keith also touched on the innovative work Croda carried out in the 1980’s with Lorenzo’s oil to help the condition ADL, pointing out the potential health benefits and opportunities to be gained from renewable sources of feedstocks.

To formally close the conference and discuss the investment opportunities from a local authority’s perspective, Marcus Walker, Head of Strategic Regeneration, Housing and Development at North Lincolnshire delivered a paper. Marcus gave a brief history and snap shot of the industry within the Humber region. Marcus said “If you total up the output of the current Humber chemical economy alone as a single company it would rank within the top 25 chemical companies in the world”. He also covered the regional and local renewable energy targets for 2010 and 2021 and from looking at the plans and potential investments that are coming through the system we’ll easily hit these targets with the planned projects alone. The Humber still has a major opportunity to attract and retain further investments from the growing and developing renewables sector. The Humber should participate as one of the renewable capitals of the world.”

Delegates were then offered a networking lunch with further opportunities to talk to the exhibitors.

Humber Chemical Focus, North Lincolnshire Council and Yorkshire hope you all enjoyed the event and found it of practical interest to your needs. We hope to see you at the next HCF conference.

A copy of the presentation slides used at the event will be emailed to all of delegates on the 10th June.

Many thanks to our sponsors and supporters including Simon Storage, ABB Engineering Services, NNFCC, Wind Direct, AJM Consulting, Energy Institute, Carbon Action Yorkshire, NSAPI and Yorkshire Forward.

A note from our co-host Marcus Walker at North Lncolnshire Council

As co-host at last weeks Renewables Process Industries Conference, I would like to thank you for attending the event and for helping to make it a real success.  I hope you found the event as interesting and informative as I did. The event was the first of its kind in the region and provided the ideal opportunity to showcase the Humber as a potential hub for renewable process industries throughout the UK.

We hope to make this an annual event and would be delighted to see you attend again in future. I apologise if I did not have the opportunity to talk to you in person, however if you would like to discuss developments on the South Humber Bank I would be delighted to assist you.  Please feel free to contact me any time by tel 01724 297305 or email marcus.walker@northlincs.gov.uk

With kind regards
